Tasmania crush NSW in 298-run Shield win

NSW captain Peter Nevill says the Blues' Sheffield Shield loss to Tasmania is a humbling experience. (AAP)

Tasmania have romped to a 298-run Sheffield Shield victory over NSW at Bellerive Oval after rolling the reigning champions twice in the space of two days.

The Blues were all out for 194 in their second innings on Monday in pursuit of a mammoth target of 493 as the Tigers notched their first win of the season.

NSW were paddling upstream after being skittled on Sunday for just 32 in 19.3 overs, their lowest-ever Shield score and the fourth worst in the competition's history.

After Jackson Bird (7-18) terrorised NSW in the first innings, fellow veteran Peter Siddle (3-31) and Sam Rainbird (2-50) did the same in the second.

Tasmania have jumped to third on the ladder, while NSW hold on to second spot but face a crunch match against leaders Queensland in 12 days.

"(It was) quite humbling loss that one," NSW skipper Peter Nevill said.

"It's quite difficult to find many positives about our batting performances.

"There'll be some re-evaluation, there'll be some reassessment of where things are at and if changes need to be made."

NSW will be sweating on the availability of in-form allrounder Sean Abbott, who split the webbing in his hand early on day one and played no further part.

"When you split webbing it can be varying degrees of severity and how long it takes to recover. It's obviously not ideal being on his bowling hand," Nevill said.

Nevill wouldn't be drawn on whether the Blues would rethink their rotation policy, which saw David Warner, Josh Hazlewood and Moises Henriques left out of the match.

Blues' opener Daniel Hughes (nine) was the first to depart on day three when he left a Siddle delivery that crashed into middle stump.

Tailender Trent Copeland top-scored with a free-swinging 58, while Mitchell Starc was next best with 36.

"The way Sids (Siddle) and Jackson (Bird) bowled, it got the rest of the team up," Tigers' captain Matthew Wade said.

"(Bird's) a class bowler. He's been a class bowler for a long time.

"I haven't been involved in something (the NSW first innings) developing that quickly. Even when I was waiting to bat it looked like a bit of a spelling mistake on the screen."

Test skipper Tim Paine had a strong game with scores of 87 and 40 not out.
