NSW audit after unregistered doc found

The registrations of all NSW doctors will be checked after an unregistered doctor was employed. (AAP)

Registrations of all doctors in NSW will be audited as the state's health authority tries to understand how one Sydney doctor worked unregistered in a hospital for seven months.

The unregistered doctor was removed from duties on Monday after Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital discovered she was not on the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency's books.

The hospital operator - South Western Sydney Local Health District - has since reviewed the registrations of all junior medical officers in its district and has found no further issues.

"All are appropriately registered," a NSW Health spokesperson said in a statement to AAP.

The state health authority is now investigating how the doctor was recruited and whether any policy or system improvements are required.

"NSW Health ... will conduct the appropriate audits to ensure that all medical officers are registered with AHPRA," the spokesperson said.

Falsely claiming to be a registered doctor is an offence that can attract a penalty of up to $60,000 and three years' imprisonment.

The unregistered doctor has claimed there was a mix-up with paperwork, the Seven Network reported.

She was fully supervised throughout her employment at the hospital from January to Monday, the hospital operator said.

Upon finding the anomaly on Monday, SWSLHD referred the matter to police and AHPRA and launched its own investigation.

But the district declined to answer whether the hospital had checked the doctor's purported registration at any time before August, including when she was first employed.

"We cannot provide further information at this time as the matter is under investigation," a spokesperson told AAP.
