CHANDIGARH: National Student Union of India (NSUI) members protested against the eateries selling products at higher prices at the student centre. The NSUI members also protested for not providing various facilities to the students living in hostels despite Covid restrictions were removed from the administrative block. The protestors also locked the dean student welfare (DSW) office, denying him entry to reiterate their demands. Later, when the authorities assured them of action they let him in.
At around 12pm, NSUI PU members, under vice-chairman Rahul Kumar reached outside the DSW office and sat on the ground. They raised slogans against the PU authorities.
The protestors said the eateries at student centre are charging higher prices. A price list was issued by the PU authorities to the eateries, but the eateries are not following the price list, affecting poor students, alleged NSUI members. The protestors demanded a price list to be placed at various points at the student centre so that eateries cannot charge their own rates.
They also said facilities for students at hostels, including common room, table tennis room, TV room, gyms are closed for students citing Covid guidelines. They alleged that the administrative block is running with full staff and hundreds of students are visiting the block everyday, so there was no need to restrict only students’ facilities.
The third demand was to increase the timings of closing of gate number 1 from 6pm to 10pm. Student union members said, “When government has removed night lockdown, there is no reason why gates ahould be closed at 6pm.”
The protestors locked the DSW office to pressurise authorities to listen to their demands. DSW Jagtar Singh after a meeting with the student union members said he will take up their issue with the higher authorities. Only after this students allowed DSW to enter his office.
