NRL to play five games in two days despite Greater Brisbane lockdown

Brisbane's Lang Park will host five NRL matches despite the Queensland government throwing the region into lockdown.

The NRL relocated its teams to Queensland to avoid border restrictions stopping teams from travelling for games.

All matches on Saturday were cancelled after the Queensland government announced six new cases of the COVID-19 Delta variant

But these games will now be played on Sunday, while the final two games of the round will be held on Monday night.

All matches will be held without spectators.

The schedule change came just hours after Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said no professional or community sport would be played during lockdown.

"No community sport, no professional sport for the next three days."

All professional and recreational sport cancelled as part of South East Queensland lockdown

The NRL said it would enact "level 4+" COVID protocols, which means all teams would play at one venue and be tested daily.

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V'landys said the competition would continue after the league was able to reach an agreement with the state government.

"I want to personally thank Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, state government officials, and in particular, Dr Jeannette Young for allowing us to present the most stringent biosecurity protocols, which when implemented, will ensure there is minimal to no risk in allowing our matches to be played with no crowds,'' he said.

Dr Young previously warned she was getting close to revoking exemptions for the NRL after a number of COVID-bubble breaches by players following the relocation of the competition to the sunshine state.

Wests Tigers player James Roberts was fined and suspended for one match after breaching protocol in his hotel room by being on the balcony.

During last weekend's round, Dr Young said she was close to considering whether she would revoke the NRL's exemption to hold the competition in the state.
