NRL player Jack de Belin could face maximum sentence of life in prison after new charge laid

Rugby league player Jack de Belin has been committed to stand trial for five charges of aggravated sexual assault.

The 28-year-old is accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman at a Wollongong unit in December.

De Belin was originally facing four charges of aggravated sexual assault in company.

He will now face an extra charge of aggravated sexual assault in company, inflicting actual bodily harm, which attracts a maximum penalty of life in prison.

The St George Illawarra Dragon's player has denied the allegations and will face a committal hearing today.

De Belin and Shellharbour Sharks player Callan Sinclair were arrested in December.

Sinclair is also due in court today to face the same five charges.

The two men first faced court in February and entered not-guilty pleas.

De Belin was stood down on full pay under a new no-fault policy, before challenging it in a landmark case in the Federal Court of Australia.

The NRL star lost the challenge after a judge dismissed his claim that the new rule constituted an "unlawful restrain of trade".
