NRL prop George Burgess has been spared a criminal conviction after pleading guilty to destroying property during a road rage incident on the NSW south coast.

The 29-year-old appeared in the Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday where he was handed a 12-month good behaviour bond after his guilty plea was accepted.

The St George Illawarra recruit was charged in August following an altercation with a 32-year-old man on Denison Street in Wollongong, according to a police statement.

At one stage the Dragons player grabbed the other man's phone and threw it on the road.

Soon after the NRL integrity unit confirmed they had been informed, but given ongoing police investigations, made no further comment.

Burgess had just recently signed a two-year-deal with the Dragons in August with hopes of resurrecting his NRL career from 2022.

The 15-time English international underwent hip surgery before securing his move back to Australia with the Dragons, following an injury that threatened to end his career.

He previously played eight seasons with South Sydney including a starring role in their 2014 grand final win before leaving the NRL to join Wigan in 2019.

He managed just eight games in the Super League in 2020 before departing the club on medical grounds, with two years left on his contract.
