Raiders beat Knights in Canberra try-fest
The Canberra Raiders have had a solid 46-28 win over the Newcastle Knights at home on Friday night to kick off round 25.
The Raiders only have a mathematical chance of cracking the top eight after 26 rounds, but they did their best, scoring eight tries to five and boosting their points differential ahead of weekend games for finals rivals the Cowboys, Sea Eagles and Dragons.
Canberra made a great start, scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes, but Newcastle steadied with two tries in three minutes around the half-hour mark to get back to 14-10 down.
The Raiders were not finished for the half, however, with full-back Jack Wighton crashing over for a four-pointer in the 33rd minute.
Then in the shadows of half-time, a silly penalty given away by the Knights was punished, with Wighton flinging the ball wide for Jordon Rapana to go over in the corner.
The Raiders went in at the break 26-10 ahead.
The Knights kept themselves in the contest with a try to prop Daniel Saifiti 12 minutes into the second stanza, but when Rapana went in again on the right, followed by another score to complete his hat-trick in the 67th minute, the Raiders had made certain of the competition points.
The home side got out to a 46-16 lead after another try to Blake Austin, but coach Ricky Stuart would not have been happy that the Raiders defence conceded two late tries to lessen the effect on for and against.
More to come.
