The National Republican Congressional Committee launched a new ad in which it mocks Democratic House candidate Zephyr Teachout as "the zany professor."
"Remember that professor who always pushed their liberal agenda?" the narrator asks as an actress with a hairstyle similar to Teachout's is shown from the back or with a book obscuring her face.
Teachout, 45, is a Fordham University associate law professor.
The ad negatively portrays her stances on issues ranging from her support of the nuclear deal with Iran and tax hikes and ties her to "socialist" Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, where Teachout is originally from.
"Teachout supports higher property taxes, higher energy taxes, and higher estate taxes," the narrator says as the actress underlines the words on a chalkboard.
This is the NRCC's third ad in the race this month and it will air in Albany, Utica and Binghamton markets.
Teachout is running against Republican John Faso to replace Republican Rep. Chris Gibson in the 19th District seat. Gibson, who has a reputation as a moderate Republican, endorsed Faso.
Both campaigns are spending heavily, and the race has exceeded $8.5 million in total. Roughly $5.87 million of that is from outside groups.
The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report/ Roll Call rates the race Tossup.
