NRA will participate in CNN town hall on Florida school shooting, network confirms

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ CNN will present a nationally televised town hall meeting about the Parkland school shooting from the BB&T Center in Sunrise on Wednesday night.

"Stand Up: The Students of Stoneman Douglas Demand Action" will air live starting at 9 p.m. EST

Moderated by CNN anchor Jake Tapper, it will feature students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, parents and community members affected by the Feb. 14 shooting that left 17 students and faculty members dead.

The event is closed to the general public.

CNN officials are working with the Parkland school to reach out to students and faculty to send them invitations to attend.

"The school shooting in Florida this week has sparked a renewed call for lawmakers to take action, and some of the loudest voices demanding change are not even old enough to vote," the network said in a news release about the town hall.

CNN said that Florida Rep. Ted Deutch, Sen. Bill Nelson and Sen. Marco Rubio have accepted invites to take part in the discussion.

The network has also confirmed that the National Rifle Association will participate in the event, with national spokeswoman Dana Loesch representing the group.

CNN also said that Florida Gov. Rick Scott and President Donald Trump were invited but will not attend.

"With only three weeks left of our annual legislative session, Governor Rick Scott will be in Tallahassee meeting with state leaders to work on ways to keep Florida students safe, including school safety improvements and keeping guns away from individuals struggling with mental illness," according to a statement from Scott's press office.

Several students including Emma Gonzalez, Cameron Kasky, David Hogg, Alex Wind and Jaclyn Corin have been vocal about the shooting and the need for increased gun control.

On Sunday morning, they appeared on political talk shows including NBC's "Meet the Press" and CNN's "State of the Union."

Students attending the CNN discussion in Sunrise include Gonzalez, Kevin Trejos, Ryan Deitsch, Alfonso Calderon and Chris Grady.
