NPHET to meet today on coronavirus in Ireland as one area leads to major concern

The National Public Health Emergency team is set to meet today to discuss the latest coronavirus trends in Ireland.

One area of major concern is the number of elderly people who have contracted the virus in recent weeks.

Ireland's cases have been high over the past month but the death rate remained low with fewer vulnerable people contracting the virus.

However, it was confirmed on Wednesday that 70 people over the age of 75 contracted the disease in the past fortnight.

Professor Philip Nolan, who tracks the virus, said: “In the last week we have begun to see a delayed increase among older and vulnerable groups. Everyone must be cautious in their interactions with these groups.”

This, he said, follows almost no cases in that age group in the summer months leading up to August.

A further 89 new cases were confirmed in Ireland on Wednesday with Dr Ronan Glynn admitting the disease was more prevalent than they would like.

The emergency team will meet today to discuss all these latest trends but no major decisions are expected to be announced.

The opening of pubs and further easing of restrictions will not be discussed again until closer to September 13.
