NPHET to meet on Thursday to discuss possibility of more measures as cases continue to spike around Ireland

The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet again on Thursday to discuss the deteriorating Covid-19 situation in Ireland.

A further 825 cases were confirmed on Monday night, following 1,800 positive infections reported over the weekend.

The national incidence rate for the last 14 days is currently at 167.8 per 100,000 people, with 7,988 new cases being diagnosed over the same period.

Cork almost doubled its new cases, from 77 on Sunday to 147 on Monday.

Dublin also saw an increase from 226 on Sunday to 254 new cases.

Cavan, the county with the worst incidence rate of the virus per 100,000 people in the past two weeks, saw 39 more cases reported today - higher than Sunday, when it was not mentioned in the official release.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan told reporters at a press briefing this evening that NPHET hopes to see "encouraging signs" by Thursday, when they will next meet.

He said the reason no further restrictions were announced last Thursday was due to wanting to "wait a reasonable amount of time" to see if Level 3 measures were having an effect on case numbers, saying they deemed 10 days to fall under this bracket.

The group of health experts will the discuss the possibility of new measures, before making a recommendation to Government later that night, or early on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, as of 2pm today 224 patients are in hospital with coronavirus, 32 of which are in intensive care.

There have been an extra 20 hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.
