NPHET to discuss coronavirus restrictions in Kildare as cases rise elsewhere

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) is set to meet today to discuss coronavirus restrictions in Co. Kildare following a rise in cases in other counties.

Kildare has remained under strict lockdown for nearly three weeks now following a sharp rise in cases in the midlands.

The restrictions are set to expire by the end of next week but Health Minister Stephen Donnelly has warned that NPHET will have to consider the infection rate if restrictions are to be eased.

Yesterday 164 new cases were reported and 22 of those were in Kildare.

However Acting Chief Medical Officer outlined six counties which are experiencing a "significant" spike in coronavirus cases in recent days- including Kildare.

Speaking on Wednesday evening, Dr Glynn revealed: “We have seen a significant number of cases in Dublin, Kildare, Tipperary, Limerick, Cork and Carlow over the past number of days.

"I would urge people everywhere to follow the public health advice and reduce mixing of households where at all possible."

Minister Donnelly yesterday told a special committee on Covid-19 that Ireland "could be looking at another national lockdown".

The Minister said the country is at a "tipping point" in dealing with the latest response to the disease and said "we have to take this deadly serious".

As of 8am today the number of people with Covid-19 in Irish hospitals is 29 up two form yesterday.

Meanwhile there are four cases in Intensive Care Units.

The number of suspected cases in hospital has reduced from to 102 from 181.
