The number of criminal cases in which Vietnamese were arrested or questioned by police last year surpassed those of other foreign nationals, according to data released Thursday by the National Police Agency.
This was the first year Vietnamese have ranked first in the category. The number of organized burglary and shoplifting cases by Vietnamese groups has increased, prompting police investigations into such groups.
The total number of crimes committed by foreign nationals stood at 17,006, up 2,873 from the previous year, the NPA said.
Vietnamese were arrested or questioned in 5,140 criminal cases, up 1,963 from the previous year. Chinese were involved in the second most cases at 4,701, up 81 from 2016.
Theft was the most common crime committed by Vietnamese at 3,080 cases, an increase of 1,386 from the previous year.
However, among foreign nationals who were arrested, questioned or on whom papers were sent to prosecutors, Chinese ranked first at 3,159, followed by Vietnamese at 2,549.
