The National Police Agency has decided on the designs for traffic signs to ensure that people related to the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and other key individuals have priority when using the roads.
The signs, which will be effective from July 1 to Sept. 30, will have "Only" or "Priority" with "Tokyo 2020" written on a blue background. The hours when these signs will be in effect will be written on the roads.
When other drivers are in the "Only" lane or do not give way to cars related to the Games in the "Priority" lane, they will receive a point on their license for a traffic violation and a fine of 6,000 yen for a standard-sized car.
The NPA also decided on the designs for stickers, which designate priority status for the Games with "Tokyo 2020" or "Games Vehicle" written on a pink background.
These stickers will be issued by the Tokyo organizing committee and the Tokyo Metropolitan Public Safety Commission and will be placed on the front and back of authorized vehicles.
The NPA will revise a Cabinet Office ordinance and a Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry ordinance before announcing the change at the end of March.
