‘Now these people have access to my house’: Home Depot customer says fridge delivery workers took her house and car keys

Getting orders delivered to your doorstep feels like one of the small joys of modern life. You order, they deliver following simple instructions —it’s that straightforward.

Except that’s not always the case. Sometimes packages are marked undeliverable when they aren’t. Other times, they get left at the wrong address entirely. And in some serious cases, delivery drivers have been accused of inappropriate behavior toward women living alone.

And now, according to one customer, they can even leave you without your house and car keys.

She says Home Depot delivery workers took her keys

TikTok user Lindsay Hirsch (@lindsayhirsch) posted a video describing the situation, which has since gone viral with over 202,300 views.

In the clip, she appears outside waiting for an Uber. “I’m currently waiting for an Uber because yesterday at my new house, I had a fridge delivered,” Hirsch begins.

She explains that when the delivery workers dropped off the fridge, they also took an Amazon package sitting by her door. That package wasn’t random either, as it contained all of her keys.

“They took an Amazon box with my key in it that had my car key, my house key, my house mailbox key, my apartment FOB, and my apartment mailbox key,” she says.

She’s not getting answers from Home Depot

Hirsch says she’s been trying to get answers from Home Depot, but so far hasn’t gotten much more than automated replies.

“I have called Home Depot many times. They have not gotten back to me,” she says. “They responded to me on Instagram and asked me to fill out a survey.” She says they have yet to get back to her on whether they located her keys.

Hirsch also says she’s texted the delivery driver multiple times and received no response. As she waits, her concern is growing.

“Home Depot has yet to reach out to me with any remedy to change my locks, offer me a rental car, [or] offer me a way to get around,” she says. “And now these people have access to my house with my keys.

Hirsch gives the delivery driver the benefit of the doubt, saying she thinks it was just a mistake.

“So Home Depot, please help me,” she concludes.

Who’s responsible here?

While the purchase and delivery were booked through Home Depot, large retailers often contract third-party delivery partners for big-item drop-offs—companies like JB Hunt, Ryder, or other logistics providers.

However, their own FAQ states that customers should report any lost or damaged items directly to Home Depot’s support team within 48 hours of delivery.

The Mary Sue has reached out to Home Depot to find out more about the situation.

She shares more details and an update in the upcoming days

In three follow-up videos, Lindsay shared more context about what happened—and what steps she’s taken since.

She first clarified that she wasn’t actually living at the house yet. The home was still empty, and she’d brought an Amazon box with counter and grout sealer to use for some projects.

Hirsch suspects she accidentally tossed her keys into that box after using them to cut it open—but says that doesn’t excuse what happened next.

“To me, the bottom line is that they didn’t bring the Amazon box into my house, so they shouldn’t have taken it out of the house,” she said.

In a second video, she responded to commenters questioning why she expected more from Home Depot.

“I paid for this fridge. I paid for the delivery. And now I’m going to have to pay to rekey my car [and] rekey my house,” she said.

While she doesn’t believe the delivery workers intentionally stole her keys, she added, “I don’t know them… so yeah, out of a safety precaution, I am going to have to do all of that stuff.”

She also revealed how far she had gone to get a response: calling Home Depot’s 800 number “multiple times over 24 hours,” reaching out on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and even messaging them about the viral TikTok. “And they have yet to respond,” she said at the time.

Things finally moved forward

In her third update, Lindsay thanked commenters who sent her direct contacts for Home Depot’s CEO and district managers.

“Once I had that, I was able to send them an email explaining the situation and attaching the TikTok,” she said. “They called me back almost immediately.”

Since then, however, things might’ve taken a sour turn. At the time of writing, Hirsch has a TikTok Story up on her account criticizing the Home Depot.

It’s a picture of a Lowe’s location with the on-screen text: “this & never stepping into a Home Depot again.”

The Mary Sue has reached out to Hirsch via TikTok direct messages to find out if there have been any more updates.

Commenters share advice—and frustration

In the comments, users rallied behind Hirsch, offering both empathy and advice.

“They definitely should help you out with those things,” one person said. “It’s not your fault that their driver took something from your house—accidentally or not—but that put you in a position where you can’t drive a car [or] get into your mailbox or house. They should definitely fix this.”

Another offered a direct route: “Call and ask for the district manager’s number. Don’t wait for them.”

Some were just baffled. “Why the hell did they take a box that wasn’t theirs?!?!” one person asked.

Another tagged the company directly: “@The Home Depot uh HELLOOO why is Home Depot even touching Amazon boxes…”

And one commenter suggested taking action: “Definitely file a police report and get a locksmith.”
