Now, special drive for girls at Billiards Academy from February 20

BHOPAL: Sports department to launch a special drive to select girls for the Billiards and Snooker Academy from February 20. This is the first time that such a talent hunt is to be organized exclusively for girls. International cueist Kamal Chawala will make the selections.

Chawla said that this will be a unique initiative to be launched by the sports department. “We have seen that there is no dearth of talent when it comes to billiards and snooker in the state. As we have a full-fledged academy we thought of conducting a special talent hunt for girl players,” said Chawala.

He added that the players will have an opportunity to showcase their talent and get selected for the academy. “This is probably the first time that any academy run by the sports department has given special focus on girls. I hope that there will be a huge number of girls to come for the selection trials. I will personally keep a close watch on the selection trials,” said Chawla.

The sports department said that the initiative will begin with 20 players. “We are launching the scheme with 20 players. More girls will be given opportunities in the future also but that depends on the response of the players for the selection trials,” said director sports Ravi Gupta.

During his recent visit to Bhopal, world champion Pankaj Advani had said the city has emerged as an important centre for snooker and billiards.
