KATIE Ebzery and Leilani Mitchell will fly the Newcastle flag at the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo after being named for the Opals.

The 12-player squad was released on Wednesday morning, just two months out from the Games.

Ebzery and fellow guard Mitchell will both contest their second Olympics after being part of the Australian women's basketball team in Rio five years ago.

"Every selection process is a difficult one as we have so many quality players in our squad but I feel we have named a very balanced team that will be able to adapt to any style of play we will confront in Tokyo," Opals coach Sandy Brondello said.

"We have good size, speed, toughness, versatility and experience which will all be required in a high-pressure situation as the Olympics.

"Our 19 days of preparation leading into our first game in Olympic tournament will be greatly beneficial to the team to develop the necessary chemistry for us to be at our peak when it matters.

"We are all excited about the journey that lies ahead and will be doing everything we can to go for gold."

Ebzery, 31, has been playing locally for junior club the Newcastle Hunters while 35-year-old Mitchell is away with WNBA outfit the Washington Mystics.

OPALS: Rebecca Allen, Liz Cambage, Katie Ebzery, Cayla George, Tessa Lavey, Tess Madgen, Eziyoda Magbegor, Leilani Mitchell, Jenna O'Hea, Alanna Smith, Stephani Talbot, Marianna Tolo.
