US Open live: Sinner sets challenge to Djokovic and Alcaraz with ruthless thrashing of Musetti

Defending champion Jannik Sinner set down another marker in his bid to retain the US Open as he thrashed fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6-1 6-4 6-2 in exactly two hours to extend his winning streak at the hard-court grand slams to 26 matches.

in Friday’s semi-finals, Sinner will next play Felix Auger-Aliassime, who battled past Alex de Minaur in over four hours, while Novak Djokovic takes on Carlos Alcaraz in a mouthwatering clash having retained his dominant streak over Taylor Fritz.

Earlier, Amanda Anisimova stunned Iga Swiatek to earn revenge for her 6-0 6-0 defeat in the Wimbledon final and book a spot in the semi-finals. Just 53 days after the American’s trashing to Swiatek on Centre Court, Anisimova got her own back in front of her own fans in New York.

Anisimova will face two-time champion Naomi Osaka for a place in her first US Open final. Osaka defeated Karolina Muchova to continue her comeback run and reach her first grand slam semi-final in four years.

Amanda Anisimova on US Open run: 'I have that confidence in myself'

20:00 , Jamie Braidwood

It still feels a bit surreal, for sure. It's the farthest I've gone by far at the US Open, and it's extremely special. Today is definitely the most meaningful victory I've had in my life.

“I have that belief in myself and that confidence that I'm able to play at the top level, and I'm able to really go head-to-head with these top three and everyone who is in the top 10. I've shown that, and I think I was able to prove that to myself time and time again for a long time now.

“It's really competitive these days, and also the grand slams are really tough. So I'm just really pleased to make it this far for the first time.”

Naomi Osaka on her return to tennis: 'It's like a video game'

19:30 , Jamie Braidwood

“I learned I loved tennis way more than I thought I did,” Osaka said of her time away from tennis. ‘I actually really love challenges. It’s like a video game. You pick it up, and even if you lose a level, you kind of just restart and keep going until you eventually win. I think it's a little tough at some times, but I wouldn't trade it for the world.”

Jessica Pegula out for 'revenge' in US Open semi-final

18:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Jessica Pegula defeated Barbora Krejcikova to return to the US Open semi-finals.

“I think it would be cool to be able to get revenge,” Pegula said of the prospect of facing Aryna Sabalenka again.

The fourth seed had previously lost six quarter-finals in a row, but has won the last two.

The 31-year-old, who is the oldest player in the women’s semi-finals, remains on the hunt for a first grand slam title.

Pegula has yet to drop a set at this year’s tournament, but has yet to play a seeded opponent.

Aryna Sabalenka's quest for US Open history

17:30 , Jamie Braidwood

World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka is aiming to become the first player to defend the US Open title since Serena Williams in 2014.

Sabalenka has continued her extremely impressive consistency at the US Open, and has now reached the semi-finals or better five years in a row.

She successfully defended her Australian Open title from 2023 in 2024.

Novak Djokovic hopes his body will be ready to face Carlos Alcaraz

16:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Novak Djokovic said he was hoping he will be fully fit to face Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open semi-final. The 38-year-old said having two days off between matches was going to be key.

“Normally I like to play the big matches on a big stage. It's just that I'm, you know, not really sure how the body is going to feel in the next few days” Djokovic said after beating Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals.

“But, you know, I'm going to do my very best with my team to be fit for that. There's going to be a lot of running involved, that's for sure. It's not going to be short points.”

Novak Djokovic v Carlos Alcaraz start time: When is US Open semi-final?

15:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz meet for the first time at the US Open as they continue their generational rivalry in a blockbuster semi-final.

Djokovic is bidding to win a record 25th grand slam title and has reached all four semi-finals this season at the age of 38. He has been unable to reach a final, however, but said he is motivated to “mess up the plans” of those who are looking ahead to a potential final between Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Alcaraz is out for revenge after losing his last two meetings with Djokovic, at this year’s Australian Open quarter-finals and last season’s Olympics final. The 22-year-old has played flawless tennis so far in New York, winning all 15 sets he has played, but Djokovic leads their head-to-head 5-3.

Alcaraz, who has won five grand slam titles, appears determined to face Sinner in a third major final and avenge his defeat to the World No 1 at Wimbledon. But Djokovic has other ideas as he stands two wins away from creating more tennis history.

Aryna Sabalenka v Jessica Pegula in US Open semi-final

14:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pegula meet again at the US Open in a rematch of last year’s final.

Sabalenka defeated Pegula in straight-sets 7-5 7-5 to win her first US Open title and third grand slam overall, but the World No 1 has not won a major title since and has lost to American opponents in her last three.

Pegula is yet to drop a set at this year’s US Open and is through to a semi-final of a grand slam for just the second time. Sabalenka advanced to the semi-finals after Marketa Vondrousova withdrew injured before their quarter-final.

After defeats to Madison Keys at the Australian Open, Coco Gauff at the French Open and Amanda Anisimova at Wimbledon, can Pegula add to Sabalenka’s difficult year or will the defending champion break the streak?

Carlos Alcaraz details unorthodox preparation for US Open semi-final against Novak Djokovic

13:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Carlos Alcaraz is getting into the Ryder Cup mood as he cites golf as the secret to his success at this year’s US Open.

Alcaraz continued his march through the draw with a 6-4 6-2 6-4 victory over 20th seed Jiri Lehecka, who beat him in Doha earlier this season but got nowhere near on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

He celebrated his triumph with a golf swing to the crowd directed at fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia, before revealing he’ll be hitting the course with the former Masters champion in preparation for a blockbuster semi-final against Novak Djokovic.

Carlos Alcaraz was not even two games and eight minutes into his US Open quarter-final against Jiri Lehecka when he reached into his box of tricks to pull out something spectacular. Running backwards and towards his backhand corner, positioned deep into a defensive position behind the baseline and between the tramlines, Alcaraz unleashed a venomous inside-in forehand that scorched past Lehecka before he could even move.

How Novak Djokovic tormented and embarrassed Taylor Fritz to extend US Open nightmare

10:30 , Jamie Braidwood

A few moments after his latest defeat to Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz faced up to the statistics, even though he knew they would not make for pretty reading. The American had just lost to Djokovic for the 11th time in their 11th meeting and the fact it was his closest yet was no consolation.

There was something else that would haunt Fritz more, and those were the chances he had to take charge of the quarter-final when Djokovic was vulnerable.

Felix Auger-Aliassime beats Alex de Minaur to reach last four of US Open

09:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Felix Auger-Aliassime staged a New York fightback to beat Alex De Minaur and reach his second US Open semi-final.

De Minaur was bidding to make the last four at a grand slam for the first time at the sixth attempt and he led by a set and a break at Flushing Meadows.

But Auger-Aliassime, who knocked out third seed Alexander Zverev in the third round, responded impressively, battling to a 4-6 7-6 (7) 7-5 7-6 (4) victory in four hours and 10 minutes.

Novak Djokovic’s historic US Open run now faces a problem he created

Novak Djokovic has some plans to disrupt. If everyone at the US Open is looking ahead to a third consecutive grand slam final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, Djokovic believes he could yet have his say. His road to a record 25 grand slam title will likely run through the two best players in the world, starting with Alcaraz in the semi-finals on Friday.

The key to Naomi Osaka’s second US Open breakthrough: ‘My dream is coming true’

07:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Shortly after giving birth to her daughter Shai in July 2023, Naomi Osaka returned to the US Open. Her comeback to the Arthur Ashe Stadium, and a court where she had lifted two of her four grand slam singles titles, was to sit in the stands and watch Coco Gauff play Karolina Muchova in the semi-finals. As Gauff advanced on her way to winning the US Open, Osaka set herself a target: she was determined to reach that stage again.

“Maybe I'm crazy or something, but I always feel like you have to imagine it, and then you have to believe it for it to actually come true,” Osaka said on Monday after defeating Gauff 6-3 6-2 . A couple of nights later, Osaka was beating Muchova 6-4 7-6 to return to her first grand slam semi-final in four years.

Naomi Osaka v Amanda Anisimova in US Open semi-final

07:00 , Jamie Braidwood

Naomi Osaka bids to reach her first grand slam final in almost five years against home US Open favourite Amanda Anisimova.

Osaka, the 2019 and 2020 champion in New York, won the last of her four grand slam titles at the 2021 Australian Open before taking a break from the sport for her mental health and giving birth to her daughter Shai in 2023.

The former World No 1 defeated Coco Gauff in the last-16 and then Karolina Muchova in the quarter-finals and is enjoying her best run of form since returning to the sport 18 months ago.

She will face Anisimova, who claimed redemption for her 6-0 6-0 Wimbledon final defeat by beating Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals 6-4 6-3. The 24-year-old American is through to her first US Open semi-final.

Lorenzo Musetti on facing Jannik Sinner: 'He pushed me to my limit'

06:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Lorenzo Musetti said he has never played an opponent who has made him rush as much as Jannik Sinner did today in their US Open quarter-final. Musetti had not played his fellow Italian in two years and said Sinner pushed him to his limit.

“A lot of things changed from our last meeting. We grew up, but of course him, he became probably the... I never played, honestly, someone who put me on this kind of rush in the rally, and I didn't have many chances on the rally, and he was always leading the rally. So that was kind of a bad feeling, of course, when I was playing against him.

“Of course, pretty impressed by Jannik's performance today. I think he served really well, and he was pushing me to my limit. Of course, he's better than me, and he showed. But I'm happy that I played against him to understand even the things that I have to improve. So hopefully soon I can have a test again.”

Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic continue streak

All three players have reached grand slam semi-finals at the last three tournaments, becoming the first trio to do so since Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer did so between 2011 and 2012.

Jannik Sinner is the youngest man to reach all four grand slam semi-finals in the same year since Rafael Nadal in 2008.

He’s also the youngest man to reach all four grand slam semi-finals in the same year as World No 1 - and only the fourth of all time.

Jannik Sinner ruthless against Lorenzo Musetti to reach US Open semi-finals

04:48 , Jamie Braidwood

Jannik Sinner has now improved his record against fellow Italians to 16 wins without defeat.

He was ruthless today to defeat Lorenzo Musetti 6-1 6-4 6-2 and return to the US Open semi-finals.

GAME, SET AND MATCH! Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-4 6-2 Lorenzo Musetti

04:44 , Jamie Braidwood

The fight has gone from Musetti as he puts over a weak drop shot and Sinner easily returns it for a winner.

Sinner has suck ed it from him and Musetti barely moves on the ace. Three match points: Sinner takes it as Musetti nets.

Exactly two hours. Dominant.

BREAK! *Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-4 5-2 Lorenzo Musetti

04:41 , Jamie Braidwood

Jannik Sinner, wow! Musetti stretches his arms out wide as Sinner thunders a forehand winner down the line, surely his fastest winner of the match.

It brings up break point, and Sinner moves one game away as Musetti hacks long. He’s just been too good tonight and will have the chance to wrap this up inside the two-hour mark.

Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-4 4-2 Lorenzo Musetti*

04:36 , Jamie Braidwood

Musetti brings up his latest break point with a wonderful backhand pass as Sinner came into the net.

But Sinner saves both: first as Musetti can’t get the serve back in play, then as Sinner goes at the backhand with his forehand.

Musetti then nets on the run and another chance slides by.

Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-4 2-0 Lorenzo Musetti*

04:16 , Jamie Braidwood

Sinner saves three break points in a single game as he defies Musetti, and leaves his fellow Italian shrugging his shoulders as he lands another forehand onto the line.

A bit of a scrappy game from Sinner but he saves his best to defend those break points.

*Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-4 1-0 Lorenzo Musetti

04:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Sinner gets the break straight away and pretty much sucks the air out of Arthur Ashe Stadium. A lot of people have looked to get the train home and avoid too late a night. They may have expected Musetti to put up more of a fight, however.

SECOND SET! Jannik Sinner 6-1 6-4 Lorenzo Musetti*

04:00 , Jamie Braidwood

As expected, Sinner makes no mistake serving for the et.

A couple of thumping serves, and he puts himself into a commanding position. It’s taken just 75 minutes.

BREAK! *Jannik Sinner 6-1 5-4 Lorenzo Musetti

03:55 , Jamie Braidwood

Oh yikes. Sinner races up to a Musetti drop shot, slamming down the backhand winner.

But then Musetti crumbles. He runs around the backhand but puts the inside-in into the net.

Then, on break point, Musetti double faults, handing the advantage to Sinner as he prepares to come out to serve for a two-set lead.

Jannik Sinner 6-1 4-4 Lorenzo Musetti*

03:50 , Jamie Braidwood

Musetti had a glorious chance to move 15-30 after powering a forehand crosscourt and forcing Sinner into the defensive shot.

But the Italian smacks the short backhand into the net and Sinner holds.

Musetti has had his nose in front in a few games now against the Sinner serve but is not converting. You can feel his frustration.

Jannik Sinner 6-1 3-3 Lorenzo Musetti*

03:41 , Jamie Braidwood

Still on serve in the second set and it’s Musetti who has closest to the break, with Sinner saving in his second game.

Musetti was puffing out his cheeks as Sinner somehow found the baseline with a defensive lob, but the 10th seed is hanging in there for now.

Jannik Sinner 6-1 2-2 Lorenzo Musetti*

03:30 , Jamie Braidwood

Musetti won just five points through the first five games of the first set, and nine in total.

But there are signs the second set is going to be more competitive. Sinner even has to save break point and does so as Musetti slices long on the return.

Ruthless from Sinner. The first set wrapped up with an ace, and in just 27 minutes.

BREAK! *Jannik Sinner 4-0 Lorenzo Musetti

03:02 , Jamie Braidwood

Big, big trouble for Musetti, who has been able to crack a few forehands at Sinner but is seeing everything being returned with interest so far.

A forehand is powered down low at Musetti’s backhand and it seals the second break.

BREAK! *Jannik Sinner 2-0 Lorenzo Musetti

02:55 , Jamie Braidwood

A string of errors from Musetti, whose one-handed backhand is already the target of Sinner’s fierce strike, and the defending champion gets the opening break already.

Jannik Sinner reveals what Alexander Bublik said to him after ruthless US Open thrashing

02:34 , Jamie Braidwood

Alexander Bublik could not believe what he saw from Jannik Sinner after the defending US Open champion marched into the quarter-finals with a 6-1 6-1 6-1 win against him in just 82 minutes.

Bublik was the last player to beat Sinner, and the only player other than Carlos Alcaraz to win against him this season, when he did so on grass at Halle shortly before Wimbledon in June.

Bublik was left celebrating as he won a game in the third set. The 28-year-old almost fell into Sinner’s arms at the net and had the World No 1 laughing along when he said to him: “That was so good. I’m not so bad, but you’re the GOAT”.

Amanda Anisimova hopes to send a positive message with US Open win

Thursday 4 September 2025 00:54 , Jamie Braidwood

Amanda Anisimova says she hopes the way she bounced back from the Wimbledon final defeat sends a positive message on her to respond to difficult moments.

“I feel like I was really able to bounce back from it really quickly,” she said. “Maybe a few years ago I wouldn't have done the same as well as I have this time but it's definitely nothing I've ever experienced before. I never lost 6-0, 6-0, and then to lose 6-0 6-0 in a Grand Slam final was a lot to experience.

“Today I'm just really, really proud of myself. I feel like I really made a point to myself and also maybe to other people that, like, if you really put a positive mindset out there or just try and work through things, then you can have a positive outcome. I feel like I was really able to do all the right things, so I'm really happy.”

Amanda Anisimova rewatched Wimbledon final last night

Thursday 4 September 2025 00:32 , Jamie Braidwood

In her press conference, Amanda Anisimova reveals she watched the Wimbledon final and her 6-0 6-0 defeat to Iga Swiatek last night, before facing her against in the US Open quarter-finals.

“Last night, nobody told me to, but I watched them back, as painful as it was. Just to see, what I can avoid or what went wrong. Then after I had to watch some good highlights to remove that from my brain.

“I think it was important for me to kind of see what happened last night going into today's match. Back then it was just kind of, like, move on. It's just kind of a freak thing that happened.

“I have family and friends. I still have the hard court swing to go. So it was kind of, just move on to the next.”

Iga Swiatek reflects on US Open defeat to Amanda Anisimova

Thursday 4 September 2025 00:17 , Jamie Braidwood

On what went wrong: “I think the serve what made the difference. She was winning, I guess, more points from her serve, and I struggled a bit to sometimes make the first serve in, and she returned the ball from second serve. So I guess that made a difference.”

On facing Anisimova after the 6-0 6-0 at Wimbledon: “It didn't really matter for me. I think everybody knows how Amanda can play. She didn't play well in Wimbledon, but it's not like she's always going to do the same mistakes or feel the same.

“I know that she's a good player. She can play great tennis. So I was ready for a tough match.”

How Novak Djokovic tormented and embarrassed Taylor Fritz to extend US Open nightmare

Wednesday 3 September 2025 16:53 , Jack Rathborn

A few moments after his latest defeat to Novak Djokovic, Taylor Fritz faced up to the statistics, even though he knew they would not make for pretty reading. The American had just lost to Djokovic for the 11th time in their 11th meeting and the fact it was his closest yet was no consolation.

Not after exiting the US Open at the quarter-final stage, continuing the drought for American men in the men’s singles, or after double-faulting on the third match point and handing Djokovic an escape from an even later night.

There was something else that would haunt Fritz more, and those were the chances he had to take charge of the quarter-final when Djokovic was vulnerable.
