Novak Djokovic considers future after French Open defeat as Jannik Sinner sets up Carlos Alcaraz final - live

Novak Djokovic said his French Open semi-final defeat to World No 1 Jannik Sinner could have been his final match at Roland Garros as he sparked suggestions that he is nearing retirement.

The 38-year-old Djokovic took his time leaving the court, waving to the crowd and touching the clay, after he was denied in his bid of winning a record-breaking 25th grand slam title. “This could have been the last match ever I played here, so I don't know,” Djokovic said. “ That's why I was a bit more emotional even in the end.”

World No 1 Sinner defeated Djokovic in straight-sets to set up a blockbuster French Open final against his young rival and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday.

It will be the first time Sinner, 23, and Alcaraz, 22, have met in a grand slam final, with Alcaraz winning his last three matches against the Italian. Alcaraz earlier reached the final when his opponent Lorenzo Musetti retired injured.

The Carlos Alcaraz problem Jannik Sinner faces in mouthwatering French Open final

In the early days of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s electric rivalry, as the two young men established themselves as the best players in the world, a prominent theme of their matches was the spectacular, highlight-reel points that would light up social media feeds in an instant. During the Indian Wells semi-final in 2024, after Sinner and Alcaraz chased down drop shots and angled volleys to shrieks from the crowd, the young rivals turned to each other and laughed across the net, sharing not only their disbelief but also the joy of pushing themselves to new heights.

As Sinner and Alcaraz now prepare to battle for the French Open title, in their first grand slam final, it is clear that their rivalry has evolved into a generational one.

Novak Djokovic weighs in on Alcaraz-Sinner rivalry

Novak Djokovic said Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s rivalry is what tennis “needs” but said the young stars have a long way to go before they can be compared to himself, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

“They need to play against each for at least 10-plus years nonstop in order to be part of the same discussion,” Djokovic laughed.

“But they're definitely great for tennis, both of them. I think their rivalry is something that our sport needs, no doubt.

“The way they are playing and the way they are approaching tennis life, I think they are going to have very successful careers.

“I'm sure that we're going to see them lifting the big trophies quite often.”

“I mean, it was bothering me a little bit throughout this tournament in some long matches. It's a muscular issue that needed to be looked at and was worked on.

“But I guess the deeper you go into tournaments, the more physically exhausting matches you have, the more you're going to, I guess, worsen the problem in a sense.

“But it wasn't, you know, giving me too much of a trouble. So I wouldn't say it was a hindrance to my game. I still could move almost 100%. So it was okay. I wouldn't give it too much attention, to be honest.”

“First of all, we hope that it's not the case, because I feel like tennis needs him. Having someone different than the younger guys and my point of view, it's so nice and amazing to see him in the locker room, and then having this energy of everything.

“I saw him practicing yesterday, you know, or couple of days ago. He's very precise in everything he does. It's a true role model for all of us.

“But if that's the case, I'm happy to be part of this, because it's a part of history also. But let's hope that's not the case, no? He said "maybe," so you never know. “

Not this time! A rally of thunderous backhands goes Sinners way after he checks a cross court shot and drills it straight instead. The ball lands on the line and the game goes back to deuce.

Before this match began it was expected to be a close affair.

Perhaps the biggest question was how a 38-year-old Novak Djokovic would cope against his younger opponent.

The answer so far is well, but not well enough. Each player is good enough to take points from the other but the margins are slightly against the Serb.

At 30-30, on his own serve, he scoops a forehand, barely knee high, into the tape and gifts up a break point opportunity.

Djokovic then leaps into another forehand in the next rally and forces an error from Sinner to reach deuce. He yells in triumph and gets a reaction from the crowd.

It may be what he needs.

Sinner miscues a sliced backhand into the net and advantage goes to Djokovic.

The results are inconclusive yet. A backhand goes wide and another error puts Sinner into the lead at 30-15.

But, a precise forehand drilled quickly down the line putd Djokovic back on level terms and there’s a chance to force break points...

... Or is there? Sinner fires down two aggressive serves and goes on to hold.

“I think at the moment he's a bit underrated, to be honest,” Zverev said. “I think like a lot of people count him out already, but this year he's had wins over Carlos at the Australian Open, he has had a win over me at the French Open. Forget the age.”

“This is where I kind of lock in and really give my best. I just hope that I will be able to physically keep up with Sinner in few days' time. It's a big challenge for me. It's only going to get tougher, but it's good.

“It is how it's supposed to be, you know, at the highest Grand Slam level.”

The overall head-to-head is 4-4. Sinner has won three matches in a row against Djokovic but this will be their first meeting on clay since the very first time they played each other in Monte Carlo in 2021, when Sinner was still a teeanger.

What has Jannik Sinner said about Novak Djokovic?

Friday 6 June 2025 17:30 , Mike Jones

“He has shown now in the last period that he is back to the level. He plays very, very well, so it's going to be even there quite tactical, but very, very difficult. He's such an experienced player, 24 grand slams. I think that says everything. Let's see. I'm just happy to be in the semis and see what I can do.

“Last year I played a good match in the semis, so I'm proud to be again here. I wouldn't have thought to be here in this position since my comeback, so I'm very happy to take things like they are, and hopefully I'm ready. I just want to watch my side of the net, and then we see.”

Friday 6 June 2025 17:28 , Jamie Braidwood

Lorenzo Musetti, speaking after injury forced him to retire from his French Open semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz.

“Sad and disappointed on how it ended. But still a great match. I felt at the beginning of the third when I was serving, I started losing a little bit of strength on the left leg behind, and [it was] definitely was going worse and worse, so I decided to stop. I think it was the right decision to make, even if it was not what I wanted.”

“I haven't played him now in quite some time and we always had some exciting matches. It's going to be of course semifinals of a grand slam against the No 1 in the world. There is no bigger occasion for me, so I'll try to do my best to step it up and perform as well as I did tonight.”

Angry Carlos Alcaraz out of trouble as Lorenzo Musetti retires from French Open semi-final

Friday 6 June 2025 16:51 , Jamie Braidwood

Carlos Alcaraz returned to the French Open final after Lorenzo Musetti retired injured, sending the defending champion through to play against either Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner on Sunday. Musetti, the Italian eighth seed, struggled with a left leg injury and quit the match after losing his eighth consecutive game, with Alcaraz progressing 4-6 7-6 (3) 6-0 2-0.

Alcaraz was in a spot of bother, though, before Musetti’s movement became too hampered for the match to be competitive. The 21-year-old had to dig deep and raise his level in the key second-set tiebreak. Musetti was looking confident and enjoying his first French Open semi-final, with Alcaraz growing frustrated and desperately needing to snap himself into focus.

Friday 6 June 2025 16:10 , Mike Jones

We’ll have some reaction from Carlos Alcaraz shortly. The Spaniard is back into the French Open final and will have a chance to defend his title.

Musetti is finding it more and more difficult to move around the court. He needs to win this set to keep the match alive but things don’t look good.

At 30-30 he double faults, Alcaraz then meets the next serve and pings his return down the line to break serve!

With that Lorenzo Musetti shakes his head. He takes off his headband and retires from the match!

His injury is too much for him and after conceding a break decides that is enough.

Alcaraz begins the fourth set in much the same way as he ended the third. He’s working Musetti across the baseline and trying to force the Italian to stretch that sore leg.

Musetti is very ginger and tentative. Alcaraz’s accuracy is too good for him and he can’t reach shots that he would usually.

A hold of serve to love puts the Spaniard into the lead.

SET! Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 7-6(3) 6-0 Lorenzo Musetti*

Friday 6 June 2025 15:58 , Mike Jones

This set is gone now for Musetti. He just needs to find a bit of rhythm and take that into the next set.

Alcaraz isn’t letting him off the hook. He comes forward and whips a forehand past the Italian who seems a little dumbstruck.

Alcaraz sets up two set points and meets a serve with a backhand push which Musetti lets go.

Six games on the bounce for Alcaraz in this set and he moves into the lead.

Musetti seems slightly hampered by an injury at the top of his leg.

*Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 7-6(3) 5-0 Lorenzo Musetti

Friday 6 June 2025 15:53 , Mike Jones

What a response this has been from Carlos Alcaraz.

After losing that opening set he’s properly switched it on. The defending champion has taken advantage of Lorenzo Musetti’s drop in form and momentum and has flow through the third set.

The Spaniard is firing on all cylinders now. Musetti can’t handle the serve and in no time flat Alcaraz is up to 40-0.

A blistering forehand down the line gives him another game and he’s just one away from winning the third set.

BREAK! Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 7-6(3) 4-0 Lorenzo Musetti*

Friday 6 June 2025 15:50 , Flo Clifford

Musetti was so composed, so focused in the first two sets, but it’s falling apart now. A forehand error opens this service game before a moment of wizardry by Alcaraz on the cross-court forehand puts him 0-40 down.

He’s saved a break to love by a truly wild Alcaraz strike, but goes long on the backhand on the next rally and this set is running away from him.

*Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 7-6(3) 3-0 Lorenzo Musetti

Friday 6 June 2025 15:46 , Flo Clifford

One-way traffic now. Musetti has two points so far in this set, Alcaraz 10.

But a glorious cross-court forehand shows there’s life in the Italian yet!

But he jumps onto a smash, a bit too keenly, and fires wide.

Into the net goes the 23-year-old and with another fist pump towards his box, Alcaraz heads to his chair with a very nice 3-0 lead.

BREAK! Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 7-6(3) 2-0 Lorenzo Musetti*

Friday 6 June 2025 15:44 , Flo Clifford

And the early break goes Alcaraz’s way! Musetti defends doggedly, getting every ball back in play, but it’s a case of one smash too far as a return lob is sent out of court.

At just a shade over two hours, the momentum has swung the way of the defending champion.
