Jannik Sinner brushed off a slight injury concern to return to the US Open final and set up a blockbuster clash with Carlos Alcaraz, with the young rivals to compete in their third grand slam final in a row on Sunday and with the World No 1 ranking on the line.
After Alcaraz had little problem beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets earlier in the day, defending champion Sinner was pushed hard by 25th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and looked to be in some trouble when he took a medical timeout after losing the second set.
Sinner prevailed to extend his winning streak at the hard-court grand slams to 27 matches, winning 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-2. The Italian, who is aiming to become the first man to retain the US Open since Roger Federer in 2008, said his injury was “nothing serious”.
Earlier, Djokovic admitted young rivals Alcaraz and Sinner are “too good” after the Spaniard denied the 38-year-old in his latest bid to win a 25th grand slam title and booked his place in the US Open final with a 6-4 7-6 6-2 victory.
“I lost three out of four slams in semis against these guys, so they're just too good, playing on a really high level,” Djokovic said. “Best-of-five makes it very, very difficult for me to play them. Particularly if it's like the end stages of the grand slam.”
