- The 24-time Grand Slam champion took the opening two sets 6-4, 6-4 and appeared on course to reach the fourth round at Roland Garros.
- However, Fonseca, 19, fought back to win the next two sets 6-3, 7-5 as he forced a deciding set.
- Fonseca was able to hold his nerve under pressure to complete an epic 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 victory as he moved into the last 16.
- Djokovic’s defeat means there will now be a new Grand Slam champion crowned at this year’s tournament after Jannik Sinner crashed out on Thursday and Carlos Alcaraz withdrew prior to the event with a wrist injury.
