Novak Djokovic has won a sixth Wimbledon title and a 20th career Grand Slam to draw level with both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at the summit of men's tennis.
All three men now have 20 Slams to their name, with Djokovic now looking to complete a clean sweep of all four Grand Slams in 2021 when he goes to the US Open in New York later this year.
The Serbian beat Italy's Matteo Berrettini 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in three hours and 24 minutes on Centre Court on Sunday as he recovered from a first set defeat to display his customary coolness in delivering victory.
Djokovic was looking surprisingly nervous in the opening exchanges of the match, serving three double faults in his first two service games as the weight of making history perhaps started to weigh heavily on his shoulders.
He lost the first set in a tie break as the powerful Berrettini punished him for the errors.
But once he managed to find his best form there was no stopping the Serbian, who became the first man to win a Wimbledon final after going a set down in seven years.
He will now go on to compete for his country at the Olympics in Tokyo.
Federer had 16 titles when Djokovic won his second in 2011 but over the last decade the Serbian has hunted down his great rivals to achieve what had looked impossible, and the world number one does not seem likely to stop there.
His hard-fought success against Italian Berrettini, who acquitted himself very well in his first slam final, made him the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win the first three titles of the year.
