Novak Djokovic outlasts Roger Federer to clinch Wimbledon title in longest ever singles final

Novak Djokovic outlasted Roger Federer to clinch his fifth Wimbledon title in the tournament's longest-ever singles final.

The Serb proved too strong for the Swiss legend after an astonishing five hours on Centre Court ended following a thrilling five-set epic.

The world number one, retaining his title from last year, eventually prevailed 7-6 1-6 7-6 4-6 12-12 (7-3) having saved two Championship points in the final set.

Djokovic snatched the opening set in a tense tiebreak before Federer roared back to level the match as he took command of the second.

But the pendulum swung back towards the world number one in the third, again producing the goods in the tiebreak despite his opponent having dominated the set.

Federer pushed back in the fourth, breaking Djokovic twice as he refused to give up on breaking his own Wimbledon record.

But he was left trailing in the decider as his old foe broke early to lead 4-2.

Again, however, the veteran superstar fought back - breaking Djokovic and then holding serve to level.

The two then couldn't be separated throughout a staggering fifth, eventually levelling at 12 games all before heading into the new tie break format.

And Djokovic then seized the initiative in the first to seven showdown and with it the Championship.
