Noughts and Crosses viewers horrified by murder twist in 'change to the book'

Noughts + Crosses viewers were left horrified over a shock murder, and a cover-up plan, in the opening episode of the new series - a scene that wasn't featured in the books.

The BBC drama is an adaption based on author Malorie Blackman's award-winning book series which shares the same name.

In the series, the episodes follow the lives of Sephy and Callum who are "divided by their colour but united by love".

Sephy is a Cross, a member of the black ruling class, while Callum is a Nought, a member of the white underclass.

While the series doesn't directly follow the books from the start, with childhood friends Callum and Sephy older in the TV series, it does keep to the plot.

In the BBC series, episode one began with Callum, brother Jude and their friend Danny having been on a night out.

As the police came to break things up, things soon got out of hand.

With Jude growing more and more against the ruling class, he refused to follow police orders.

Danny tried to calm him down, while also trying to stop him from lashing out at an officer who was trying to force him into the van for disobeying his orders.

But as Danny ran to him the officer grabbed him and pushed him back, before smashing him over the head with a weapon.

He was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, while his condition later stabilised despite him being unresponsive.

Jude was sitting with him in the hospital when Jack Dorn, the leader of the Liberation Militia (a rebel group formed to take action against the Crosses), arrived to check on his condition.

Danny was killed by Jack (BBC)

Callum's brother Jude had been attending meetings with the group, while also taking part in protests - including one outside the hospital where Danny was recovering.

He left Jack with Danny while he went to get a drink, and it's then that viewers learned of Jack's horrifying real intentions.

Jack began smothering an injured Danny who couldn't fight back, with the character dying.

It was clear, with a trailer hinting at the next episode, that Jack had planned to kill Danny to create more tensions between the Noughts and Crosses, while giving his group and other Noughts a reason to fight the ruling class.

Viewers were stunned by the murder scene (BBC)

Viewers were shocked by the scenes, with many taking to Twitter to share their surprise.

One fan said: "Wtf that murdering b*****d killed the boy so the Crosses will be blamed."

Another tweeted: "HE'S GETTING SMOTHERED WHAT."

A third commented: "DO NOT LEAVE HIM ALONE WITH THAT MAN!!"

Meanwhile a fourth added: "Yoooo this didn’t happen in the book?! Why they gotta do that to Ben Mitchell."

Noughts + Crosses airs Thursdays at 9pm on BBC One.
