This book is sort of a modernised Romeo and Juliet, where two young children, from two warring sides of society, fall in love and grow up together. The girl is called Persephone (often called Sephy) and she is the daughter of the president, who is one of the most vicious men in the city.
Sephy is a Cross, a black skinned citizen. The Crosses are the ruling race. The other child, Callum, is the son of a lumber jack. He is a inferior white citizen and, like all other white citizens, he is a nought.
However, soon Callum’s family becomes involved with a rebellion group who plant a bomb in a nearby shopping centre. Callum himself doesn’t now about the bomb until his dad accidentally lets it slip. Callum then realises Sephy is in the shopping centre and runs from his house...
This story is a race against everything to find love in the cruel, cold place that our star crossed lovers live in. I give this book a 5 out of 5 for the pure amazing web that is its plot.
It may be full of the saddest twists and the most evil plans - but the love shines through, making this a true love story of our time. I would read it again any day, anywhere, any time. It is truly an amazing read.
