Notts pub closed after departure of 'best ever' landlord

A man described as "one of the best landlords ever" by locals has left the pub he helped to turn around.

Trevor Howell, a first-time landlord, vowed to transform The Cricketers, in Beeston, when he took over just under two years ago by making it a place for families and "decent people."

And he did, winning an army of loyal followers by creating a welcoming environment and introducing food, leaving the pub's chequered history behind.

Mr Howell told regulars he wouldn't be reopening the boarded-up pub, in Wollaton Road, in an emotional Facebook post.

He said: "I would like to take this opportunity to let you know that I vacate my position as landlord of The Cricketers Pub, Beeston.

"I would like to thank each of you for every experience shared, friendship made and the good times we had together. I would like all of you to know that knowing you has been very rewarding and I really appreciate all the love and kindness extended to me and those who worked with me.

"Words are not enough to express my gratitude but I pray that one day our paths can cross again. The time spent with you all will be cherished forever."

Customers were shocked by his department. One posted: "No way... you did so many positive things while you were there. Really shocked you’re going."

Another wrote: "Sorry to see you go Trevor. You became a very good friend and you were one of the best landlords to ever run that pub.

"You did so much in so little time that you were there so it's a sad day you gave up your tenancy. You will be missed by me and my family and a lot of loyal customers."

During his spell at The Cricketers Mr Howell introduced an all-you-can-eat Jamaican buffet, breakfast and a Sunday carvery.

Former Nottingham Forest legend Wes Morgan helped to celebrate the first anniversary last October - and tried out some of the food.

A spokesman for Ei Publican Partnerships, which owns the pub, told Nottinghamshire Live: "We can confirm that The Cricketers in Beeston is currently closed but we plan to reopen as soon as possible with a new publican.

"We would like to reassure customers that we are committed to ensuring that this site remains a thriving pub at the heart of its local community.”
