Notts Police warning as someone dials 999 to report being given the wrong change after haircut

A member of the public dialled 999 to tell Nottinghamshire Police that they'd been given the wrong amount of change after a haircut.

The force has released details of the call in a fresh appeal to the public to use the emergency number responsibly.

It comes after a similar incident last month, when a mum dialled 999 to call the force because her daughter wouldn't get out of bed.

Superintendent Paul Burrows, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "The vast majority of the public understand that 999 is only for emergency calls but, despite the work we regularly do in the media, online and over-the-phone to explain to people how to use 999 responsibly, we do still receive a high number of misplaced calls to our emergency number.

"While some of the misplaced calls we receive range from honest errors of judgement to the more unusual, there is a serious point to be made here as every misplaced call our emergency call handlers receive has the potential to delay us from responding to genuine emergencies."

Nottinghamshire Police say that any non-emergency reports can be made using the 101 number, which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
