Notts horse fair plans to come back twice this year after successful weekend

Organisers of a horse fair which came to Nottinghamshire last weekend have said it will return this summer.

The event took place on April 27 and 28, with stall holders and caravans arriving earlier in the week.

Despite the wet weather, organisers said they were happy with the "tremendous turnout" and are planning to return to the site in July and September this year.

The gypsy horse fair, which was previously held in Kenilworth, moved to the new location next to the M1 junction 26, in Nuthall.

Mick Davidson, who promoted the event through social media, confirmed the fair was discussing future dates.

The 74-year-old said: "The organisers have had a meeting this morning with authorities. Everyone's happy and they've seen the lease.

Council plans for huge horse fair to 'run as smoothly as possible' after meeting with organisers

"We are planning to come back in July and September with dates advertised nearer the time.

"We can't control the weather unfortunately but the turnout was tremendous this weekend.

"In future, we may need to look at the entrance as there was a bit of feedback about that, but we had no other complaints and the site has been left spotless."

Mr Davidson also said the organisers had planned for litter pickers to visit the site to ensure it was left as it was found.

Many businesses in the area chose to close over the weekend, due to rumours of large numbers of visitors.

Residents also raised concerns about the location being close to housing areas, as well as the post code on the advertisement directing people onto a housing estate. Mr Davidson said the directions would be changed for the next fair.

"To avoid confusion, we won't use the post code next time as it was taking people to the wrong place and we don't want to worry anyone," Mr Davidson added.

"We will simply say it is just off junction 26 of the M1. It's a great field and an ideal location."

Mr Davidson added he was happy to see more than 1,000 new members to the Facebook group which he runs to promote the horse fair.

Police and council are meeting organisers of gypsy horse fair due to arrive in Notts

He said: "Thank you to everyone in Nottingham who were accepting and patient, and came to see the fair.

"I feel sorry that businesses felt they had to close.

"Hopefully people will see now what it's all about and all are welcome to come in future."

One family who went to take a look around the fair said they were "pleasantly surprised" by what was on offer.

Dinesh Verma, 44, of Nuthall, said: “We live around the corner. We thought we would come and see what it’s all about.

“We have been pleasantly surprised. Everyone is very friendly and we have had a good day. There’s lots to see and do.

“I think it’s a shame about all the negativity in the lead up to this. People just don’t really understand it and so get scared but it’s been great.

"I think it is a case of people being afraid of the unknown and they get a lot of bad press and it is unfair on them at the end of the day. I have not had a bad experience here at all today.

“If it was sunnier it would be even better. It’s a shame it wasn’t on last weekend to be honest then I think a lot more people would have come down.”

The owners of the field are Horton's Estate Ltd, who said they did not authorise use of the site, and were seeking legal advice to prevent future events.

But organisers reiterated their belief that they had a signed lease for the land, where they have maintained the site and kept horses for the last nine years.

The event was previously held three times a year in Kenilworth from 2001, but was forced to relocate after that site was sold to developers last year
