Notts County transfer update as Neal Ardley lines up more deals

Neal Ardley is hoping that Notts County can add at least three more fresh faces to their squad in the coming weeks - and he does have targets lined up.

The Magpies were lacking physical presence in their opening day defeat to Eastleigh on Saturday as 6ft6in Reda Johnson scored the game's only goal with his head from yet another poorly defended Notts set-piece.

And with defender Ben Turner still a number of weeks from full fitness, Notts boss Ardley is looking to recruit two more central defenders and a robust striker to help combat the division's bullying sides.

Notts signed seven players in 24 hours across Wednesday and Thursday , all of which featured at the Silverlake Stadium, but admits that the club must be careful not to overspend this season.

"I am disappointed once again that we lost to a set-piece," Ardley told NottinghamshireLive .

"It is the same old, same old. We have worked really hard at them in the summer.

"No matter how hard you work, no matter how you defend them, you need strength and power.

"We are still two centre-half signings short, and a target man short, and we need to get that all up to speed in the next few weeks.

"We do not have the physicality to deal with this league at the moment.

"We need to add that, and quickly, but we have not got a never-ending pot of money.

"There are, there are," he continued when asked if he had players already lined-up.

"But we have to be really careful. We can't just get those players in and say that we will get out (the league), because sometimes you can't get out.

"And you know what that means. We have been through that over the last few months.

"We have got to be sensible, but the owners have been brilliant and they are passionate about football and will do everything they can to help.

"We just need to make sure that we do it right together."
