Notts County take down 'oldest Football League club' sign as new era beckons at Meadow Lane

Staff at Notts County have been pictured taking down their proud signs at Meadow Lane stadium as a new era beckons for the club.

The signs which read 'World Oldest Football League Club' hung from the roof of the Jimmy Sirrel Stand and the side of the Derek Pavis Stand to celebrate the Magpies' 155-year stint in the league.

But last season's final-day defeat to Swindon Town secured the club's fate, handing the baton of English football's oldest league club to cross-Trent rivals Nottingham Forest.

However, it is unclear yet whether the club plan to simply reword their signage having only removed the wording from the sign on the Jimmy Sirrel stand and not the two Notts badges that book-end it.

The Magpies are still the world's oldest professional football club, a claim that reaches back to 1862.

Their first ever non-league campaign is less that a week away with Neal Ardley's side set to take on Eastleigh at the Silverlake Stadium on Saturday at 3pm.

On Wednesday, the club announced their first singing of the summer with experienced defender Ben Turner joining the ranks as Ardley's side look to bounce back to the Football League at the first time of asking.
