Notts County survival chances dealt hefty blow as Macclesfield pull off surprise victory

Notts County have fallen back to the bottom of the Football League after relegation rivals Macclesfield Town pulled off a surprise victory at home to play-off chasing Exeter City.

The Silkmen, who were playing their game in hand on the Magpies, had to fight from behind twice to take victory at Moss Rose.

Exeter's Ryan Bowman gave his side the lead on two occasions during the first half, but goals from Harry Bowman and Michael Rose saw the underdogs level at the break - before Smith's 85th minute winner sealed all three points.

The victory was enough to lift Sol Campbell's side out of the relegation zone for the first time since August, dropping managerless Yeovil Town into the bottom two.

Neal Ardley's side will now head to Gresty Road on Saturday as the division's bottom club once again.

Victory against Crewe Alexandra could still see the 'Pies climb back out of the relegation places, but with an inferior goal difference they cannot rely on a photo finish on final day in May.

Ross Fitzsimons had to 'block out' early season nightmares after conceding seconds into Notts County return

"I think this will go down to the final day," said Ardley, looking ahead to Saturday's clash.

"There will be twists and turns, we all know it. When we played Exeter we had a point and Macclesfield didn't, and the within thirty seconds that turned on it's head."

"Every point will be vital, particularly with our goal difference."
