Notts County sign Sunderland and Tranmere defenders in double swoop

Notts County have signed Tranmere Rovers defender Mark Ellis and Sunderland full-back Kenton Richardson on loan.

The Magpies have been in the hunt for a centre-back following a calf injury to Ben Turner which had left Connell Rawlinson and Alex Lacey as the only two central defenders available.

Ellis, who has signed on loan until the end of the season, has made just nine appearances for Tranmere this season and the Magpies have been quick to capitalise on his availability.

The 32-year-old has vast experience having played for Torquay United, Carlisle United, Forest Green among others which Notts will hope will be a useful asset ahead of a hectic schedule of fixtures.

Richardson, meanwhile, has arrived on a deal until the beginning of April. He was previously at Hartlepool United where he played more than 40 games.

Both players could be in line to make his debuts on Tuesday night when Notts host Halifax Town at Meadow Lane with Neal Ardley's side in the thick of the promotion race.

Results were kind for them at the weekend after Notts were given a break from league duties as Aldershot reported a bout of Covid in their camp.

But Torquay lost at home to Hartlepool which blew the title race wide open and has left the Magpies nine points behind the leaders with three games in hand and the top three still to play.
