Notts County schedule minute's applause in memory of Scunthorpe United fan

Notts County will come together for a minute's applause this weekend in their National League fixture with Scunthorpe United to celebrate the life of young Iron fan Owen Newton.

Owen and three passengers were taken to hospital following a single-vehicle crash which took place on Brumby Common Lane at around 10pm on Thursday, March 9. Sadly, Owen died in the early hours of Monday.

Following the tragic news, hundreds of tributes have poured in for the 17-year-old across social media, describing him as a "lovely lad", a "smashing young man" and "one of the good ones".

A minute's applause will be held at Meadow Lane this weekend during the 17th minute of their match against Dean Brennan's side in memory of Owen, who was a lifelong Scunthorpe fan.

A spokesperson at Scunthorpe United said: “Owen Newton loved Saturday afternoon in the Britcon Stand known as the Donny Road End with friends creating a great atmosphere singing nonstop for 90 minutes, supporting his beloved Iron.

"As a mark of respect the club and the fans are asking everyone attending the match at Notts County on Saturday to applaud Owen in the 17th minute of the game at Meadow Lane.

"Members of Owen’s family and friends will be in attendance in the Jimmy Sirrel Stand, our thoughts are with them all at this time.”

Shortly after Owen was first admitted to intensive care in Hull, a GoFundMe page was set up to support his family. At the time of writing, almost £5,000 has been raised by nearly 200 people.
