Notts County player ratings vs Boreham Wood as Magpies secure Wembley date

Jodi Jones' extra-time winner sent Notts County to the National League play-off final on a dramatic afternoon at Meadow Lane.

The Magpies came from two goals down after Femi Ilesanmi and Lee Ndlovu gave Boreham Wood a two-goal advantage at the break, only for Aden Baldwin to pull one back from distance two minutes into the second half before netting late in injury-time to send the game extra-time.

But with penalties looming, up stepped Jones to fire an effort through a crowd of bodies to send those inside the ground into raptures as they confirmed their place at Wembley next weekend.

The Notts head coach made no changes to the starting line-up that drew with York City last weekend - just the fifth time he has done so this campaign - with one change in personnel on the bench with goalkeeper Archie Mair preferred to Frank Vincent.

In what was a fast start by the hosts with three opportunities coming within the first 10 minutes - Ruben Rodrigues firing Adam Chicksen's cross wide before blazing over the bar after good work from Aaron Nemane, before Matty Palmer's low cross somehow evading the Zimbabwean at the back post as the ball rolled agonisingly across the goal-line.

The Portuguese midfielder again found himself in position to open the scoring for the third time just shy of the half-hour mark - Sam Austin's ball round the corner releasing him into the area but unable to find a way past Joe McDonnell who signed on an emergency loan from Eastleigh on Friday night.

But the hosts were remined of the threat Luke Garrard's side possessed as Sam Slocombe was forced into making a smart save from Jack Payne, taking the lead minutes later as Tyrone Marsh beat the offside trap before firing the ball into Ilesanmi to bundle the ball into the net despite the best efforts of Nemane.

And Meadow Lane was stunned into silence on the stroke of half-time as a defensive mix-up between John Bostock and Baldwin allowed Ndlovu to race towards goal and finish in front of the Kop.

But as the Notts players walked down the tunnel, the 16,000 plus crowd inside the stadium remained in high spirits in rallying their team - with the hosts responding two minutes after the restart, with Baldwin having threatened from distance in the first half, taking aim once more and finding the bottom corner to give the hosts a lifeline.

However, after atoning for his earlier error, Baldwin almost gifted the visitors a third minutes later after failing to spot Ndlovu behind him and allowing him in on goal - fortunately he could only find the post after rounding Slocombe.

Only one side had come from behind to beat Luke Garrard's side this season, but Notts were given the chance to draw level when Rodrigues was tripped inside the area - the midfielder assuming responsibility but seeing his effort saved by former Notts keeper McDonnell.

But when all hope seemed lost, the unlikeliest of heroes stepped up to send the game to extra-time as substitute Jodi Jones' dangerous delivery was steered home by Baldwin for his second of the afternoon as the Kop erupted into a sea of black and white pandemonium.

Extra-time it would be and with tired legs, gaps in both sides started to show - substitute Josh Rees forcing Slocombe into making a smart save before Nemane produced a vital interception to sweep the ball behind with Rees lurking at the back post.

But progression was sealed in the dying embers, substitute Jones finding space on the left-hand side before firing towards goal with the help of McDonnell to cap off an incredible afternoon at Meadow Lane.

Here is how we rated the Notts players this afternoon.

Sam Slocombe - 6

Positioned himself nicely to deal with the balls over the top, but there was nothing he could have done with the opening two goals.

Kyle Cameron - 7

Offered an attacking force going forward and defended well throughout the entirety of the contest. A proper captain's performance.

Aden Baldwin - 8

A mixed afternoon for the defender. Created several problems for his team when forcing passes from defence, but came up with two massive moments in the contest to get his side back into the game.

Connell Rawlinson - 6

Looked like he struggled against the pace of Marsh on the right-hand side but continued to try and offer an attacking outlet when Notts went forward.

Adam Chicksen - 5

Another display when the full-back's attacking threat was nullified throughout, often forced to play backwards and unable to affect the final third.

Aaron Nemane - 6

After a positive start to the game, the Frenchman was reluctant to take on his man as the game progressed but was a useful outlet in extra-time with his pace causing problems down the right.

Matty Palmer - 8

A usual performance from Palmer, dictating Notts' play in midfield and looking to create angles to get his team up the pitch.

John Bostock - 6

Guilty of gifting Boreham Wood their second of the afternoon with a poor pass to Baldwin. Not up to the usual standard we have seen in recent weeks but did improve as the game went on.

Ruben Rodrigues - 5

Spurned four glorious opportunities in the first period and missed a penalty in the second half. Just not his day unfortunately but gave everything - he could barely walk after before being replaced by O'Brien.

Sam Austin - 6

Buzzed around the attacking third and worked hard but was unable to create anything clear cut before being replaced by Scott.

Macaulay Langstaff - 6

Rarely given an opportunity to score, with Boreham Wood defending well against him throughout.

SUBS:

Cedwyn Scott - 6

Didn't really click for him during his time on the pitch, but continued to press from the front to try and force a mistake in The Wood's defence.

Jodi Jones - 9

Injected that directness that was lacking from the wide positions, evident as his cross set up the dramatic equaliser before smashing the ball in late on for the winner.

Jim O'Brien - 6

Provided that experience in extra-time to keep possession in an intense period of the game.

Richard Brindley - 6

A late change for Baldwin in extra-time.
