Notts County player ratings as inspired substitutions rescue a point against Chesterfield

Notts County came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Chesterfield with Macaulay Langstaff bagging his second brace of the National League season.

The Magpies were simply not good enough in the first half, and Chesterfield got the goal their performance merited when Liam Mandeville smashed the ball into the bottom corner.

The players were greeted with boo's from the Meadow Lane crowd following their first half showing, with Paul Cook's side controlling everything in the game.

And the visitors continued to dominate and doubled their lead just before the hour-mark, this time Akwasi Asante did well to skip beyond two Notts defenders before flashing the ball beyond Sam Slocombe.

But an inspired double change reinvigorated Notts and injected them with some much needed energy. And their first goal came a minute after those changes, with Langstaff smashing the ball beyond Ross Fitzsimons after a mix up in the Spirerites defence.

And the comeback was complete just three minutes later, one of those substitutes Sam Austin broke down the right-hand side before whipping an inch-perfect cross onto the head of Langstaff for his fourth goal of the season.

Notts continued to probe and almost had their third of the afternoon as Ruben Rodrigues picked the pocket of Tyrone Williams and picked out Langstaff in the area, however the Magpies number nine was denied the hat-trick ball following some heroic defending on the line.

Here is how we rated the Magpies this evening.

Sam Slocombe - 6

Was commanding in his area when called upon, but nothing he could do about Mandeville's or Asante's goals.

Kyle Cameron - 6

Looked to break forward with the ball and was one of the only players looking to play with the ball. Commanding in the air and a typical captain's performance to rally his team when 2-0 down.

Aden Baldwin - 6

Some wayward passes but apart from that, a solid return to the starting but was guilt of overplaying in dangerous areas. Concerning he left the field in what looks like a reoccurrence of that Achilles problem.

Richard Brindley - 6

Was keen to drive forward and help Nemane, but was caught out on a number of occasions when pushing on.

Adam Chicksen - 5

Deliveries were slightly better than Tuesday, but again, opted to play back for the majority, rather than going forward.

Aaron Nemane - 6

Was keen to drive at his defender for the whole game and was a real threat throughout.

Matty Palmer - 6

Controlled the game from midfield well. Picked out some good passes and drove from midfield on a number of occasions.

Jim O'Brien - 5

Typical display from the midfielder. Passed well, ran hard and picked up a customary yellow card, but his substitution was needed to give Notts that much needed energy.

Ruben Rodrigues - 6

Showed some nice touches and was keen to drive forward, but was not involved in the game enough to make a real impact.

Kairo Mitchell - 5

Worked hard and put himself about, but the link up with Langstaff lacked throughout the entirety of the match.

Macaulay Langstaff - 7

Completely different player in the second half. Showed his predatory finishing ability with two well taken goals and his link up with Scott will excite the Notts fans.

SUBS:

Sam Austin - 7

Made a real impact following his introduction, providing the assist for Langstaff's second goal. His energy was just the thing Notts needed as Chesterfield looked to dominate.

Cedwyn Scott - 6

Put himself about and worked really hard. Minutes are vital and surely he is only two or three games from starting up front with Langstaff.

Geraldo Bajrami - 6

Late change for Aden Baldwin and was solid during his 15 minute cameo.
