Notts County manager Neal Ardley pinpoints key reasons for Greg Abbott arrival

Neal Ardley is thrilled to see Greg Abbott back at Notts County and believes his new number two will help "recreate the incredible atmosphere" of last season.

Abbott returns to the club six years after he helped lead the club to one of the greatest escapes of their history when, alongside Shaun Derry, the they stayed in League One against all the odds.

But the former Carlisle manager rejoins Notts in the National League after their relegation from the EFL last season and Abbott has wasted no time in setting his sights on promotion.

He will replace Neil Cox as number two after he was appointed manager of Scunthorpe United earlier this month.

And Ardley believes Abbott's experience will be of a huge benefit to him.

“Greg’s got incredible experience and standing in the game and achieved fantastic things alongside Derry when he was here before.

“He’s got a wealth of knowledge in terms of players, recruitment, coaching, management and assistant managing.

“I’ve gone from having a good friend to something fresh – someone who I haven’t worked with before, but who I know.

“It’s going to be a change – but change can bring positives, and I think Greg’s certainly going to do that.

“He has a huge personality and, with the strong characters we’ve got in the dressing room, I think he will help recreate the incredible atmosphere we had last season.”
