Notts County legend pays tribute as Magpies prepare to celebrate FA Cup win 125 years ago

Notts County legend Colin Slater MBE says it has been a “privilege” to help organise the club’s 125th anniversary  of their FA Cup triumph.

The Magpies will celebrate their momentous achievement on Saturday as part of their community day which has seen them slash ticket prices for their clash with Exeter at Meadow Lane to just £10.

Notts won the FA Cup on March 31 in 1894 with Saturday being the closest home game to the actual date when the Magpies lifted the trophy following a 4-1 win over Bolton at Goodison Park.

Former Radio Nottingham commentator Slater, who is the club’s honorary vice-president, was assisted by Notts’ all-time record goalscorer Les Bradd and others in planning the event.

Notts County have reasons for hope but why would anyone buy them until relegation battle is decided?

“It’s been a huge privilege for me to chair the group of knowledgeable Notts enthusiasts who have made all this possible, and we are all grateful to many others who have been very willing to offer their services,” he said.

“Some of these are big corporate bodies, none of them bigger than the Football Association who complied with our request to make the present-day FA Cup available on Saturday.

“In addition, three of us - Steve Carter, of the club’s media office, Les Bradd and me - made an appointment to visit the National Football Museum in Manchester a few weeks ago.

“The FA Cup won by Notts is on display there, along with many other handsome trophies from down the years.

“It was a real pleasure to see Notts honourably mentioned for posterity, along with other cup winners from around the same time, on a plaque on the plinth of the cup.”

The festivities will begin at 11am at the Portlan Leisure Centre where Football in the Community are holding their annual Open Day.

The present-day FA Cup will be on show and it will then be moved to the Broken Wheelbarrow at Meadow Lane from 12.15 to 1pm.

Michael Doyle's rousing message to Notts County and their fans

In the club’s hospitality suite, Nottingham-born playwright Billy Ivory will be presenting a 10-minute one-man play he’s written about the day, Notts beat Bolton Wanderers 4-1.

That begins at 1.30pm as part of the build-up to the Exeter game for which tickets are still available.
