Notts County inch closer to Wembley as they book FA Trophy semi-final date with Aveley win

Notts County's dreams of a day at Wembley moved a step closer as they booked their place in the FA Trophy semi-final with a thumping win over part-time Aveley.

The Magpies controlled the first half but had to be patient for their breakthrough having been thwarted by some fine goalkeeping from David Hughes who denied Tom Crawford and Kristian Dennis.

But the Aveley stopper was beaten when he allowed Jim O'Brien's shot to squirm through his grasp and he was then beaten again moments later when Tom Crawford steered in from the edge of the box.

Notts moved further in front before the break when Kyle Wootton teed up Sam Osborne who guided into the far corner.

Neal Ardley's side then looked to increase their lead after the break and another goal arrived when a lovely move ended with Kristian Dennis supplying Wootton who finished emphatically beyond Hughes.

That prompted Ardley to make a change as he sent on Scott Wilson to make his debut following his move from Oldham and the striker's first touch was an inspired one as he raced through to slot past Hughes.

Osborne would have had a second had it not been for a fine save while Crawford also lashed wide as Notts marched into the semi-finals.
