Notts County given huge boost as key man signs new deal

Michael Doyle has committed his future to Notts County and will become the club's assistant head coach on a permanent basis.

The captain was given the role in a temporary capacity back in May after Maurice Ross resigned for making a racially insensitive comment about winger Enzio Boldewijn.

Doyle combined coaching and playing in the final few weeks of the season, but is expected to take on more duties in the dugout with head coach Ian Burchnall next season.

The 39-year-old will still be registered as a player meaning Notts will be able to call on the inspirational Irishman when required.

Doyle has always wanted to pursue a career in coaching and was linked with a return to Portsmouth as part of the backroom staff at Fratton Park.

Doyle's decision to remain at Meadow Lane will come as a huge boost to Notts given he played a key role on and off the pitch as the club reached the play-offs for the second consecutive season.

He was virtually ever-present for the Magpies with one of his outstanding performances coming as an emergency goalkeeper in a 3-1 win over Dagenham.

He is the first player of several to commit their futures to the club with Notts hopeful that Connell Rawlinson and goalkeeper Sam Slocombe will also put pen to paper this week.

Midfielder Jake Reeves has left the club, however, after exercising a clause in his contract which allowed him to quit Meadow Lane if he had the chance of returning to the EFL.
