Notts County deserve to be relegated to non-league admits Neal Ardley

A dejected Neal Ardley admitted Notts County’s defeat summed up their season after their relegation from the Football League was confirmed.

Needing to win, the Magpies were safe early in the second half as Kane Hemmings’ penalty put them ahead and with Macclesfield losing, a miracle looked possible.

But Kaiyne Woolery drew Swindon level before further goals from Theo Robinson sent Notts hurtling out of the Football League for the first time in their history.

Backed by more than 2,000 fans, who were a credit to the club, Ardley said the defensive problems was the story of a shambolic campaign.

“I feel as bad as the supporters,” he said.

“We wanted to give ourselves a chance and do our bit and for the first 60 minutes it was everything we wanted.

“The two goals we conceded summed up the season. It was two breakaways and we conceded twice.

“I told the players that I can’t fault their effort, but I can fault some of your decision making.

How the Notts County players rated at Swindon Town as League Two exit was confirmed

“We have conceded silly goals all season and that’s the reason why we are where we are.

"We got our noses in front but this team hasn't been able to keep clean sheets all season and it is painful to hear, but we deserve to go down."
