Notts County defender Pierce Bird seals move to Boston United

Notts County defender Pierce Bird has joined ambitious National League north side Boston United on-loan.

The former Dunkirk defender will join the Pilgrims until January and he will be eligible for their FA Cup second round clash against Oldham next weekend.

Notts have also allowed the defender to be part of Boston's FA Trophy quest which continues tomorrow when they play Atherton Collieries in the third qualifying round.

Boston boss Craig Elliott said: "With the unfortunate injuries of late, we needed a committed left-sided central defender who can give us good balance.

"Not only is Pierce a good defender but he has very good distribution which is important to how we want to play.

"He comes highly recommended and I appreciate the help in getting the deal done from Neil Cox at Notts County."

Manager Neal Ardley will hope Bird gets regular first-team football with Boston having failed to establish himself in Notts' defence this season.

He has made just five appearances this term and has been unable to dislodge the impressive Ben Turner or Connell Rawlinson.

His chances of breaking into the first team have also suffered due to the arrival of defender Alex Lacey who is closing in on making his debut for the club after playing 60 minutes against Nottingham Forest under-23s last week.

Bird is one of several players the club had been hoping to send out on loan with Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain, Matt Tootle and Tom Crawford also available.

Ardley revealed how there were two offers for players yesterday and it comes on the back of his admission in a fans' forum in midweek that the squad he has is currently too big.
