Notts County defender Matt Tootle joins Chesterfield for the rest of the season

Matt Tootle has left Notts County to join Chesterfield for the remainder of the season.

The  right-back has been reunited with former boss John Sheridan who signed him for the Magpies  when he was manager at Meadow Lane in 2016.

It is unclear whether  he will be able to play in the FA Trophy clash between the sides next month or the National League fixture next year.

Tootle, a popular figure with supporters, has struggled to break into the Notts side this season under boss Neal Ardley and has made just two appearances this term.

They both came at the start of the season when he came off the substitutes’ bench on the opening day of the season at Eastleigh and then against Barnet.

But Richard Brindley’s arrival following those games further pushed him down the pecking order which meant that Tootle has not been able  to make the bench for much of the campaign.

The move to Chesterfield will take him to the end of his contract at Notts which is due to expire in  the summer.

In total, he has made more than 100 appearances for the club,  winning the player of the year award in the 2017-18 season.
