Notts County boss Neal Ardley won't rule out swoop for non-league gems

Notts County manager Neal Ardley has not ruled out moving for National League North and South players now their season has ended.

A host of part-time players face the prospect of no football until next season after clubs were told their campaign is likely to be declared null and void due to concerns over funding.

Teams in the north and south divisions are now in a battle to keep their star players from moving to the National League top flight with Stockport this week raiding Chorley for striker Harry Cardwell and Elliott Newby.

Notts pulled off one of their greatest transfer successes last January when they raided Blyth Spartans for Callum Roberts having paid a nominal fee for the winger who is now regarded as one of the hottest prospects outside the Football League.

And Magpies boss Ardley says that still remains an option for Notts to explore should they wish to bolster their squad for the final time in March.

"Is it something you can do? Yeah, of course," he said.

"Those players want to play football, and the longer it goes on, the more the less football they've had, so they don't become someone that's going to hit the ground running.

"You've got to a certain point in March and then the window closes for everybody. But there are two sides to it.

"If the owners wanted to spend their money we could go and sign loads and loads of players, but it makes it harder for me to keep everyone happy.

"Ultimately with the rules, and I don't agree with them that you can only have five subs, then we have three or four players not even in the squad at times.

"What's the point in adding other players to that at the moment unless there's a glaring hole in your in your squad or your positions?"

Notts this week moved for defender Tylor Golden from League Two side Salford City as the Magpies were forced into the market to compensate for the loss of defender Richard Brindley to a groin problem.

He is set to make his bow in the FA Trophy quarter-final clash with Oxford City at Meadow Lane on Saturday as Notts look to take one step closer to Wembley.

But with City's season now over after Conference South was halted, Ardley knows David Oldfield's side will arrive revved up knowing it could be the final game they play this term.

"They would have prepared for this game.," he said.

"Their whole season is on this game and they coming to Meadow Lane, and they're going to come and try and cause an upset.

"They were up there in their league. They're a good team with good players.

"And there's a few in there I really like. It's a dangerous, dangerous game."
