Notts 10-year-old sleeps in tent for almost a month for homeless veterans

A Nottinghamshire lad has slept outside for almost 30 nights, raising thousands of pounds for homeless veterans.

Joshua Partridge, 10, has slept in a tent in his Calverton garden on weekends and in school holidays for 27 nights.

Mum Anne-Marie Partridge said the youngster, who is a pupil at St Wilfrids C of E Primary School, is taking part in the RBLI (Royal British Legion Institute) Great Tommy Sleep Out, to raise money for homeless and injured veterans.

Anne-Marie, 42, said: "Joshua said he would try to do seven nights at first and he set a target of £300. Now he has raised over £3,000.

"He normally goes out about 9pm he’s got a book and a light with him.

"Then he smashed it in two days so decided that seven days wasn't enough.

"He said to me, 'the homeless don't get to choose how many nights they are outside for'. At one point he did it for two weeks when we were isolating.

"I can't tell you how proud I am of him. My husband Nick and I think he is very selfless. I just think it is lovely for someone who is only 10.

"It is very close to my heart because my grandad was a veteran so we have grown up with war stories."

But when the Calverton Branch of The Friends of the British Legion donated £1000 to Joshua's cause, he decided he would continue to sleep outside until the fundraiser officially ends in June.

Anne-Marie added: "The fundraiser is still going up now.

"I had a lovely message from a man who made me cry, and another stranger who donated £150 out of nowhere. I got really emotional about it."

The fundraiser will officially end on June 24, and until then Joshua plans to carry on sleeping in the garden.

The RBLI help veterans and their families in their time of need & support them to live the most independent life possible.
