NottinghamshireLive readers pick Nottingham Forest's greatest ever centre-backs

Des Walker has been voted as Nottingham Forest's greatest ever central defender by NottinghamshireLive readers, with our very own Post columnist Kenny Burns runner-up.

Walker, who turned out over 400 times in Garibaldi and 59 times for England, won 57 percent of the overall vote in our poll, a landslide victory.

The London-born defender was first spotted by Forest in 1980, aged 14, and just four years later was handed his debut under Brian Clough.

During his initial 12-year spell in Nottingham, Walker was named in the PFA Team of the Year four times as the club won the League Cup twice, the Full Members Cups twice and the Football League Centenary Tournament.

In 1992, he was sold to Euoropean Cup runners-up Sampdoria who had won five trophies in as many seasons, including the European Cup Winner's Cup.

But after making just 30 appearances in Italy, he returned to England with Sheffield Wednesday before, at the end of his career, he came back to the City Ground with Forest in the second tier.

Partnering him in our all-time greatest Reds XI is European Cup winner Burns.

Burns turned out over 20 times for Scotland as a striker before being converted back to a central defender upon his arrival at the City Ground.

One of the true miracle men, the 65-year-old was signed by Clough for a Forest side under performing in the second division but within four years they had conquered Europe, twice.

The ex-Leeds United and Derby County man also won the Football Writers' Player of the Year in 1978.

Kenny Burns chats to Martin O'Neill (Ritchie Sumpter @JMS Photography)

David Meers: As the chant went: "You'll never beat Des Walker".

Richard Ottaway : Des Walker is our greatest ever player for me and at his peak (1990) was, I believe, the greatest defender in the world.

Diane Redman: Gotta be Des Walker. Chettle was quality though.

Richard Leonard: Des Walker. Quality player. There’s not many the Italians take from us. Larry Lloyd and Kenny Burns were a great pairing, but individually they were not a patch on Des.

Lee Tilston : Tough to look beyond Des Walker and Kenny Burns but can't discount Larry Lloyd after all that was a twice European Cup winning defensive pairing.

Jay Jay James Bar: King Kenny hands down number one!

Mick Smith: Des Walker is probably the best centre half I've seen and was punished for England for one mistake - yet kept the Germans out on his own whilst injured once!

Scott Day: The unbeatable Des Walker and the unbreakable Kenny Burns.

Forest's greatest all-time XI so far:

GK: Peter Shilton - 86%

RB: Viv Anderson - 80%

CB: Des Walker - 57%

CB Kenny Burns - 14%
