Nottinghamshire weather warning updated as Met Office predicts 4 days of thunderstorms

Nottingham may have been basking in the sunshine for the past few days but there are weather warnings ahead and thunderstorms are on their way.

The Met office has issued warnings for the East Midlands that start on Wednesday, June 16, and last until the beginning of the weekend.

Weather experts say that thunderstorms will start later on Wednesday. The thunderstorm warning stays in place until Saturday with the potential for travel disruption and flooding.

Forecasters say: "Although there remains significant uncertainty in location and timing, areas of thunderstorms are expected to move northeast across parts of England and Wales from late Wednesday through to Friday morning.

"Whilst not all locations will be affected, some intense thunderstorms may occur during this period with torrential rain, hail, frequent lightning and strong gusty winds possible."

The Met office is predicting that rainfall totals of around 30 mm could fall in an hour, adding "some locations potentially receiving around 50 mm in 2-3 hours, although these will be fairly isolated."

It is expected that the weather warnings will stay in place until Saturday.

Met office says: "Thunderstorms may once again develop across much of England and east Wales through Friday, lasting into Saturday."

"Another spell of thundery rain is expected to push north across England and east Wales through Friday morning, persisting for much of the day, before clearing early on Saturday.

"There is some uncertainty in storm coverage... but where they do develop torrential rain, intense thunderstorms, hail and frequent lightning are all possible."

Again, rainfall totals of 20-40 mm (perhaps reaching 60 mm in a few areas) are possible in 12 hours. With the most intense storms, 30-40 mm could fall in an hour or two.

The good news is that storms should clear during Saturday morning.
