Nottinghamshire to aid 105 Afghan refugees through new relocation programme

Nottinghamshire will be assist and supporting refugees from Afghanistan through a new programme.

A total of 105 people (21 families) will be relocated to the county.

It comes as the UK Government has pledged to take up to 20,000 Afghan refugees who were forced to flee their home or face threats of persecution from the Taliban. Around 5,000 could arrive here within the first year.

Councils across Nottinghamshire have already helped two families resettle at home in the UK

Mansfield District Council, and others, have pledged their support in assisting Afghans.

Hayley Barsby, chief executive at Mansfield District Council, who is coordinating local efforts, said: “The Nottinghamshire County area has pledged to support 105 people (21 families) through the Afghan (Relocation and Assistance Programme).

“The pledge has only been possible through the commitment of all the District Councils, County Council and partners in working together to provide housing , education and support to these families .”

The figures do not include the city of Nottingham.

Charities in the UK supporting refugees from Afghanistan have said that public support for the cause has been “really positive.”
