Nottinghamshire snow leads to flight delays, travel disruption and a 'serious crash' on a day when Arctic blast hit

Flight delays, bus diversions and a "serious" crash dominated Nottinghamshire headlines on a day in which heavy snowfall impacted people across the county and the rest of the East Midlands. People across parts of the county will have woken to a small carpet of snow, but the weather did not let up for the rest of Thursday, March 9.

Snow continued to fall throughout the day following a yellow weather warning issued by the Met Office, which is in place until 2pm tomorrow (March 10). The heavy snowfall led to travel disruptions throughout the city, as well as East Midlands Airport temporarily holding all flights in order to clear snow off their runway.

The airport, located near to Castle Donington, explained four departing flights were delayed by snow falling onto the runway. The snow was cleared by 12.41pm, allowing operations to resume.

Nottingham City Transport issued a series of tweets throughout Thursday alerting customers to diversions for their services. The Lilac 25, Blue 39, 40 and 42, Sky Blue 45, 46, and 47 and the Lime 56, 57 and 58 buses were some of the services that were disrupted due to the bad weather conditions.

Nottinghamshire Live spoke to residents around Breck Hill Road, Mapperley, where cars were congested up and down the road, about the disruptions. Rick Boxall, 62, said: "I've been doing a journey that usually takes five minutes and it's taken me 20.

"The road has been gritted but we're so far past that now. I don't know what's going on on Porchester Road - I've never seen so many cars there.

"It's usually a busy road but I don't know why so many cars are trying to get up there now. All the drivers are going so slowly and it just backs everything up.

"I would usually do my shopping down the other side of Porchester Road, but by the time I get there, it'll be too late. So, I'm out now just doing my shopping but it's going to take an extra hour."

Retired 71-year-old Henry Tompkins said: "It's barmy. I wanted to get the bus into town to do a bit of shopping but I don't think that's happening.

"You rarely see it come down this much. It's never quite this heavy.

"It's going to be like this for the rest of the week so I'm just going to do all my shopping today and stay in tomorrow. I think it's going to take a while though."

Another Mapperley resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It hasn't affected me much yet, but I've just left the house. We were going to catch the bus but it's now all snowed up.

"Me and my wife were supposed to be meeting friends for lunch. I think it might just be us two now."

Drivers were advised to avoid a road in Bircotes following a serious crash. The incident took place in Bawtry Road, Bircotes, on Thursday morning (March 9).

It was reported at around 4.45am. A Nottinghamshire Police spokesperson said: "Motorists are being advised to avoid Bawtry Road, Bircotes, after a serious crash this morning. Emergency services were called at around 9.45am."

At this stage, it is not known how many vehicles were involved in the incident or if anyone has been injured. Elsewhere, Nottingham City Council confirmed that Aspley Library had been forced to close and bin and waste collection delayed due to weather and road conditions.

Bins in Mapperley and Bulwell Forest will be emptied on March 10, depending on the weather. A more severe amber warning was issued for parts of the East Midlands, valid over the border in Derbyshire, from 3pm on Thursday through to noon on Friday (March 10).

Under the amber warning, areas affected have been warned of travel delays, train cancellations and power cuts. In its amber warning, the weather agency said: "Snow is expected to develop over northern England on Thursday morning, becoming persistent through the afternoon and overnight into early Friday morning before slowly easing.

"Residual impacts from snowfall are expected to persist through Friday morning. 10 to 20cm of snow is expected to fall quite widely, with some places seeing 30 to 40cm. "Strong easterly winds are expected to accompany this snow, leading to blizzards and drifting of lying snow."
