Nottinghamshire school closes after parent of pupil tests positive for coronavirus

A school in Nottinghamshire has closed after the parent of a pupil contracted coronavirus (Covid-19).

As a result, Holgate Academy in Hucknall has announced it will close from 12pm today (Tuesday, March 17).

The closure is set to continue until April 3 and through the Easter break when the situation will be reviewed. The school expects to reopen on Monday, April 20.

In a letter addressed to parents, the school said: "A parent of a student within The Holgate Academy has had confirmation that they have contracted COVID-19, as a result we will be closing the academy from 12pm today.

"This closure will be up to and including the 3 April and will continue throughout the Easter break. We will continue to review the situation, but our current expectation is that we will re-open on Monday 20 April.

"We have made this decision in the interests of the health and wellbeing of all students and staff, following advice from Public Health England.

"As we are facing an unprecedented situation, we will be monitoring the situation closely. We will keep parents and carers regularly updated about the closure and all updates will be posted to a dedicated webpage which you can access by visiting our website."

Online resources will be used to provide support to students throughout the closure and students have been asked to stick to their normal timetable where possible.

"Our main priority is to ensure that during the closure period, the impact on the education of our students is minimised as much as possible," the letter added.

"In preparation for this, all students across all year groups will have access to learning resources and homework for each of their subjects.

"All students should aim to follow their normal timetable as closely as possible to ensure they remain on track with their learning. This is particularly important for students who are approaching formal summer examinations."

On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced unprecedented peacetime measure to control the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19).

In the first of now daily press conferences, Mr Johnson called on people to stay away from pubs, clubs and theatres and to avoid all non-essential contact and travel.

He added that anyone living in a household with somebody who has the symptoms of a persistent cough or fever should isolate themselves for 14 days.

Currently, the Government is working to keep schools open and has not announced any plans for closures.

The number of cases in Nottinghamshire more than doubled in 24 hours on Monday from five to 10 in the city and from six to 14 in the county.
