On a bad day for bowlers at Trent Bridge Nottinghamshire’s opening batsmen, Michael Lumb and Riki Wessels, set a record stand for a List A game in England during their side’s 20-run win over Northamptonshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup.
Their opening stand of 342 in 39.2 overs was broken when Wessels fell to Stephen Crook for 146. Lumb went on to make 184. Their effort beat the 318 of Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly against Sri Lanka in Taunton in 1999.
Nottinghamshire made 445 for eight in their 50 overs, making it the second highest total in List A matches worldwide, beaten only by Surrey’s 496 for four against Gloucestershire at The Oval in 2007.
Lumb’s and Wessels’ 342 was the third highest List A stand of all time. The record was set in February last year when Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels took 372 off the Zimbabwe attack at Manuka Oval in the 2015 World Cup.
Northamptonshire made a bold attempt to overhaul their hosts but were all out for 425, with Rory Kleinvedlt scoring 128 and Adam Rossington 97. Kleinvedlt’s century off 45 balls included eight fours and seven sixes.
